Oct. 7: Food, agriculture and natural resources career fair

More than 90 representatives of food, agriculture and natural resources businesses will be in the Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms to talk to students in the School of Agriculture. Information will be available on full-time employment, internships and summer jobs. DuPont Ag Products, General Mills, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Perdue Farms Inc. and the USDA are among the companies and agencies that will be present. The career fair runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and from 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. CONTACT: Office of Academic Programs, (765) 494-8470

Oct. 11-12: Sheep shearing school

Purdue's Department of Animal Sciences and Cooperative Extension Service, in cooperation with the Indiana Sheep Breeders Association, invite beginning and advanced shearers to attend sheep shearing classes at the Dubois County Fairgrounds in Jasper. The program will emphasize hands-on learning of shearing techniques, care and use of shearing equipment and ways to increase the value of the wool crop. Charlie Swaim, a shearing expert, will be the featured instructor. The school will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 11 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 12. A fee of $35 per person pays for refreshments and the use of sheep and shearing equipment. Enrollment is limited to 25 people on a first-come, first-served basis. Oct. 16: Purdue ESEI Environmental Symposium

The public is invited to hear Purdue researchers and others present current environmental research. Speakers scheduled for the 1:30 to 3 p.m. presentations in the Krannert Auditorium (Room 140) of the Krannert Building include Lt. Gov. Joseph Kernan, Tom Davenport from the EPA Region 5 office and Bernie Engel, professor of agricultural and biological engineering. Seventy poster presentations on current environmental work at Purdue will be displayed from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in Room 212 of Stewart Center. Ray Anderson, CEO of Interface Inc., will give a lecture titled, "A Spear in the Chest and Subsequent Events" at 7:30 p.m. in Room 140 of the Krannert Building. There is no cost or registration for the symposium, which is sponsored by Purdue's Environmental Sciences and Engineering Institute. Oct. 16: Bull auction

The Indiana Beef Evaluation Program will hold its annual bull auction at 6:30 p.m. at the Springville Feeder Auction, 10 miles northwest of Bedford on State Road 54/58. The event is open to the public. CONTACT: Larry Nelson, professor of animal science, (765) 494-4831

Nov. 18-19 Arborist Certification Conference

This conference is for commercial arborists, municipal administrators, consultants and interested citizens who want to prepare for the Certified Arborist exam. Topics covered by Purdue Extension Service and Indiana Department of Natural Resources specialists include tree identification, problem diagnosis, tree planting and establishment, tree climbing, and pruning. Attendance is limited to 50, and preregistration is required. The conference, which will begin in Stewart Center at 8:30 a.m., costs $160, payable to Purdue University. The exam, which immediately follows the conference but is not included, costs $100 for International Society of Arborists members and $150 for non-members, and must be received at ISA headquarters by Nov. 3. Nov. 19: Income tax management for farmers

Indiana farmers and others will have an opportunity to learn what the Taxpayers' Relief Act of 1997 means for them during a free closed-circuit television discussion scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19. Purdue Extension will present the discussion of the new law on the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunications System (IHETS).
