Water Ski Club to be host of national tournament

The Purdue Water Ski Club will be host of the 1997 National Collegiate Waterski Association Championships, Oct. 9-11, at Waters Edge Estates, Wilmington, Ill. This is the first time since 1979 that the event will be held in the Midwest.

Video of Purdue team members practicing for the nationals and an interview with Chad Kodiak, nationals chairman, are available from Grady Jones, Purdue News Service, (765) 494-2079.

Competing in the nationals will be about 200 skiers from 12 teams, including Purdue, who advanced from six regional tournaments. About 75 teams participated in the regional competitions, and this is the third time in the past four years that Purdue has advanced to the national finals.

Purdue was named 1997 host during last year's nationals. "The selection committee was really impressed with our proposal," says Kodiak. The competition will be at a new facility about an hour south of Chicago.

In addition to Purdue and defending national champion Northeast Louisiana University, the other qualifiers are Michigan State University, Arizona State University, University of Washington, Texas A & M, University of Southwest Louisiana, Rollins College, Eckerd College, Bates College and University of Alabama. Clemson University is expected to complete the field as a qualifier.
