Purdue expert says men and women can be friends

Friendships between men and women are legitimate and need not be more than that, says a Purdue expert on friendships. "Our culture tends to view romance as much more important than friendship," says William Rawlins, professor of communication. "And men tend to sexualize relationships more than women do," he says. Rawlins says it shouldn't be, but many people assume ulterior motives in friendships between men and women -- so much so that either person involved may feel that they are supposed to convert the friendship into something more. A segment featuring Rawlins will air on the CBS This Morning show on Thursday, Sept. 25 sometime between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. CONTACT: Rawlins, 765-494-7780; e-mail, rawlinsw@vm.cc.purdue.edu
