Sept. 21-27: Farm Safety Week
Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan will present the proclamation for Farm Safety Week at 2 p.m. Sept.
23, in Room 333 of the State Capitol Building in Indianapolis. The State of Indiana
will recognize and salute Indiana farmers during this week, while taking time out
to analyze the precautions that must be taken on the farm to preserve farm safety. CONTACT:

Sept. 30: Pumpkin Twilight Meeting
The public is invited to take a look at pumpkins from the 1997 variety trial at the
Purdue O'Neall Memorial Vegetable Research Center. Purdue specialists will be available
at the event for questions and discussion. To get to the research center, take US
231 south of Lafayette, past McCutcheon High School and turn east onto 500 S. Continue
east when 500 S takes a sharp turn to the north, and follow the road downhill to

Oct. 7: Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Career Fair
Students can talk to more than 90 representatives of food, agriculture and natural
resources businesses in the Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms. Information will be
available on internships, full-time employment and summer jobs. DuPont Ag Products,
General Mills, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Perdue Farms Inc. and the USDA
are among the companies that will be present. The career fair runs from 9:30 a.m.
to noon, and from 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. CONTACT: Office of Academic Programs, (765)

Oct. 11-12: Sheep Shearing School
Purdue's Department of Animal Sciences and Cooperative Extension Service, in cooperation
with the Indiana Sheep Breeders Association, invite beginning and advanced shearers
to attend sheep shearing classes. The program will emphasize hands-on learning of
shearing techniques, care and use of shearing equipment and ways to increase the value
of the wool crop. Charlie Swaim, a shearing expert, will be the featured instructor.
The school will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 11, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Oct. 12 at the Dubois County Fairgrounds in Jasper. A fee of $35 per person pays for refreshments
and the use of sheep and shearing equipment. Enrollment is limited to 25 people on

Oct. 16: Environmental Symposium
The public is invited to hear environmental speakers present current environmental
research being done at Purdue. Speakers scheduled for the 1:30 to 3 p.m. presentations
in Room 140 of the Krannert Building include Lt. Gov. Joseph Kernan, Tom Davenport
from the EPA Region 5 and Bernie Engel, professor of agricultural and biological engineering.
Seventy poster presentations on current environmental work at Purdue will be displayed
from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in Room 212 of Stewart Center. Ray Anderson, CEO of Interface, Inc., will be giving a lecture titled, "A Spear in the Chest and Subsequent Events"
at 7:30 p.m. in Room 140 of the Krannert Building. There is no cost or registration

Oct. 16: Bull Auction
The Indiana Beef Evaluation Program will hold its annual bull auction at 6:30 p.m.
at the Springville Feeder Auction. The auction will be held 10 miles northwest of

Nov. 19: Taxpayers' Relief Discussion
Indiana farmers and others will have an opportunity to learn what the Taxpayers' Relief
Act of 1997 means for them during a free closed-circuit television discussion from
7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (EST). Purdue Extension will present the discussion of the new law
on the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunications System (IHETS). The program will
be available in many Indiana counties. For a list of program sites, call a local
