Water ski club to be host of national tournament

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The best collegiate water ski teams in the country will be the guests of Purdue University's team next month.

The Purdue Water Ski Club will be host of the 1997 National Collegiate Waterski Association Championships, Oct. 9 through 11, at Waters Edge Estates, Wilmington, Ill.

The event will feature about 200 skiers from 12 teams who earned spots in the nationals from six regional competitions, said Chad Kodiak, nationals chairman. About 75 teams are expected to participate in the regional tournaments.

Purdue was named 1997 host during last year's nationals. "The selection committee was really impressed with our proposal. The competition will be at a new facility about an hour south of Chicago and this will be the first time the nationals will be conducted in the Midwest since 1979," Kodiak said.

Much of the operating expenses for the competition will be covered by entrance fees, he said. However, the club is looking for event sponsors.

Purdue finished eighth in last year's nationals, after finishing first in the Midwest regional.
