JOURNALISTS: Here are some newsworthy Purdue events during the next two weeks.
Video available on the hazards of fishing for loans
"Into the Shark Tank: Surviving the Loan Closing Process," is a video designed to
make borrowers aware of some of the pitfalls involved in closing a loan. Barbara
Rowe, Extension Specialist in Consumer Sciences and Retailing at Purdue, and doctoral
candidate Paul Camp, created the video to help borrowers get the loans they want. The video,
available throughout Indiana from local Extension Service offices, is accompanied
by a pamphlet that explains many of the video's concepts. "We want people to understand
what is being presented to them when they borrow money," says Camp. "The Truth in
Lending Act says that certain materials, like the finance charge and the annual percentage
rate (APR), must be presented, but there are no requirements for how they should
be presented, and that can complicate the whole process." Rowe says the video points
out techniques sometimes used by lenders to confuse or rush consumers into making
credit decisions they might not otherwise make. CONTACT: Barbara Rowe, (765) 494-8316
