JOURNALISTS: Here are two story ideas and some newsworthy Purdue events during the next two weeks.

Collective bargaining works this Labor Day

The recent settlement in the United Parcel Service strike was a victory for the collective bargaining process, says a Purdue expert on labor issues. James Dworkin, associate dean in Purdue's Krannert School of Management, says the strike was resolved because of escalating costs for both UPS and the striking workers. He says that would not have happened if President Clinton had intervened. "It shows that when you put people into a room and they sit down and talk, you're eventually going to get results," he says. Purdue expert returns from third trip to Bosnia

Progress is being made in Bosnia and Croatia -- both in reconstruction and in the healing of wounds, says a Purdue expert on the region. Charles Ingrao, professor of history, recently returned from his third trip to the former Yugoslavia in the last year and a half. "Most people by now have jobs and are rebuilding," he says. Ingrao says this period of peace has also lessened the hatred between people. "People are mellowing," he says. He describes a talk with a Bosnian family whose home had been destroyed during the war. The family was quick to point out that Serb forces known as Chetniks -- not Serbs themselves -- were responsible for the damage. "They indicated that for every Chetnik there were two Serbs with whom they could live and work in peace," Ingrao says. During this recent trip, Ingrao lectured and held extensive talks with U.S. diplomats and foreign officials. CONTACT: Ingrao, (765) 494-8385; home: (765) 463-9658; e-mail, ingrao@omni.cc.purdue.edu
