WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Approximately 875 Purdue University students will be eligible to receive degrees during commencement ceremonies at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Elliott Hall of Music.
About 425 students will be eligible for undergraduate degrees, said Roy A. Johnson, associate registrar. About 280 other students will qualify for master's or educational specialist degrees, and an estimated 170 doctoral degrees will be conferred.
Purdue President Steven C. Beering will be the commencement speaker. Purdue Alumni Association President Dr. Charles E. Boonstra, St. Joseph, Mich., also will address the new graduates during the ceremonies. Pedro Salcedo (sal-SAY-doe), Lima, Peru, will give the student response. He will earn a bachelor's degree from the School of Management.
Music for the ceremony will be presented by the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Anne Harrigan. Mendi Armstrong of Peru, Ind., a student participant in Purdue Musical Organizations, will be the featured soloist. She is a junior in the School of Nursing.
This will be the 172nd commencement ceremony at Purdue. The university has been recognizing
summer graduates at the West Lafayette campus every year since 1984.

The one-credit course will introduce adult learners to Purdue when the fall semester starts Aug. 25. Student services, university regulations and campus resources will be discussed during the five-week course. Students also will be provided with information about improving study, time management, career planning and testing skills.
The seminar will meet at 9:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, or from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays. To register for the course, contact an academic adviser. -- Richard Borgens, professor of developmental anatomy in the School of Veterinary Medicine, received the Marcus Singer Medal for Regeneration Research from the Marcus Singer Society. This is the 15th anniversary of the society's creation. Marcus Singer was a well-known regeneration scientist, and the society recognizes outstanding achievement in that field.
-- Renee Thomas, director of Purdue's Black Cultural Center, attended the Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration at Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. The four-week institute works to improve the status of women at the middle and executive levels of higher education administration by providing participants with skills and information pertinent to the management and governance of colleges and universities and with timely information and perspectives on teaching, research and service.
