July 28: Turf Field Day

Purdue will showcase its latest turfgrass research with cultivar trials, pest management studies and turf management studies. The event takes place at Purdue's Agronomy Research Center and is intended for golf course personnel, lawn care operators, sports turf managers and general grounds managers. Visitors can stop by a turfgrass trade show and sample a barbecue lunch for $10. The pre-register fee is $17 for center members, and $22 for non members. July 29: Southeast Purdue Ag Center Field Day

The Southeast Purdue Ag Center in Butlerville invites the public to get acquainted with the facility through several tours, including "Forest Management Assistance Programs," "The Future of BT Corn," "Purdue's Liming Recommendation," "Corn and Soybean Herbicide Plots," and "Identifying Common Field Crop Diseases." Tours begin at 9 a.m. A complementary lunch will be served at noon. There is no cost for registration, but visitors are asked to RSVP for lunch with their local extension office. July 29-30: Breaking New Ground Rural Leadership Training

Breaking New Ground invites persons with disabilities, family members, counselors and educators to attend the Fourth Annual Rural Leadership Conference for Persons with Disabilities. Participants will attend programs such as "Making a Difference in Your Community," "Assistance and Support for Caregivers," "Accessing Services," "Internet and World Wide Web Disability Resources," and "What's New in Assistive Devices." The conference will be held at the Crossroads Rehabilitation Center in Indianapolis. The training fee is $75, but scholarships are available and space is limited. July 31, Aug. 1-2: Indiana Land Care Expo

The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and the Indiana Land Improvement Contractors Association will hold a three-day expo to educate the public on land care. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, visitors can see land care displays and watch the construction of farm ponds, animal waste lagoons, gardening and home orchards at a farm near Shelbyville. Aug. 6-19: Indiana State Fair

The annual Indiana State Fair offers a variety of activities for families at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Special events include concerts by country stars Alan Jackson and Tim McGraw, midway rides, daily parades, free exhibits, food and home improvement demonstrations, Black Expo Day, Clown Day, 4-H exhibits, petting zoos and more. Advance tickets are $4 and can be purchased at Marsh Supermarkets, Revco Drugs, Indiana Farm Bureau, Signature Inn and the Indiana State Fair Box Office. Tickets at the door are $5. Aug. 7: Marketsmart Seminar

Farmers can update their marketing skills with help from the Chicago Board of Trade and the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service at the free MarketSmart Seminar. The seminar provides information on the use of marketing risk management tours in four areas: futures markets; options markets; local cash markets; and seasonal price and basis patterns. All presentations are done in a workshop format, so participants should take pencils and calculators. The program will be held in Stewart Center on the Purdue campus from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A complimentary continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Aug. 7: National Healthy Beaches Symposium

The Inter-Agency Task Force on E. coli will hold a National Healthy Beaches Symposium on E. coli at Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton. The one-day symposium will include presentations by nationally known experts on storm water runoff, health concerns related to swimming in contaminated waters, monitoring, septic systems, sanitary discharges from boats and new E. coli analysis methods. High levels of E. coli, a problematic beach-side bacteria, are frequently the cause of summer beach closings. Five closings occurred in Indiana this year by July 4. AuG. 19: Jasper County Co-Op Technology Tour

The Jasper County Co-Op presents sessions on ragweed control and site management at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Boswell. Farmers will visit sites treated for ragweed and learn how to use variables to help with site management. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and tours begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration and lunch are free, but an RSVP should be made with either the Benton, Warren or Tippecanoe extension offices by Aug. 15. Aug. 26: Davis Purdue Ag Center Field Day

The Davis Purdue Ag Center will hold a farm tour and educational presentations, including "Corn and Soybean Herbicides," "Debugging BT Corn," "Composting Swine Mortality," "Leafhopper Resistant Alfalfa," and "Confined Feeding Regulations." Registration begins at 9 a.m., and tours begin at 9:30 a.m. There is no cost for registration or lunch. The ag center is located five miles north of Farmland on State Road 1. Sept. 2-3: National Food Corn Field Day

The Gibson County Plot Committee and the Purdue University Cooperative Extension service invites corn farmers and food corn processors to attend informational programs about food grade corn production in Southwestern Indiana. The event will be held in both Evansville and Princeton. Visitors will meet for a social event starting at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at the Casino Aztar Hotel in Evansville. The morning tours begin at 8 a.m. Sept. 3 at BMR Farms in Princeton, and afternoon tours start at 12:30 p.m. at the Gibson County Fairgrounds. Lunch will be provided.
