JULY 20-23: TOP FARMER CROP WORKSHOP

Forty-five farmers, professionals and company presidents will share techniques such as production technology, marketing and personnel management. Sessions include precision farming, land-grant research in site-specific farming, using technology to analyze corn and soybeans, the future of genetics, and farming without subsidies. The workshop will be at Purdue's West Lafayette campus and costs $199 for the first person and $75 for each additional person from the same farm. JULY 24-26: "INDY INTERNATIONAL" WINE COMPETITION

The Indiana State Fair International Wine Competition, also known as the "Indy International," was the fourth largest wine competition in the country last year at 1,701 entries . The judging takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 24-26 at the Farm Bureau Building on the Fairgrounds. Journalists are invited to participate in a hands-on short course on wine judging where the subtleties will be explained by national wine experts. CONTACT: Chris Sigurdson, (765) 494-8415.

JULY 28: TURF FIELD DAY

Purdue will showcase its latest turfgrass research with cultivar trials, pest management studies and turf management studies. The event will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Purdue's Agronomy Research Center. It is intended for golf course personnel, lawn care operators, sports turf managers and general grounds managers. Visitors can stop by a turfgrass trade show and sample a barbecue lunch for $10. Registration can be done up to the day of the event. The preregistration fee is $17 for center members, $22 for nonmembers. Registration on the day of the event is $22 for members and $27 for nonmembers. JULY 29: SOUTHEAST PURDUE AG CENTER FIELD DAY

The Southeast Purdue Ag Center in Butlerville invites the public to get acquainted with the facility through several tours. Tours include "Forest Management Assistance Programs," "The Future of Bt Corn," "Purdue's Liming Recommendation," "Corn and Soybean Herbicide Plots," and "Identifying Common Field Crop Diseases." Tours begin at 9 a.m. A complementary lunch will be served at noon. There is no cost for registration, but visitors are asked to RSVP for lunch with the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service office in their county. CONTACT: Don Biehle, (812) 458-6977.

July 29-30: breaking new ground rural leadership training

Breaking New Ground is inviting persons with disabilities, family members, counselors, and educators to attend the Fourth Annual Rural Leadership Conference for Persons With Disabilities. Participants will attend programs such as "Making a Difference in Your Community," "Assistance and Support for Caregivers," "Accessing Services," "Internet and World Wide Web Disability Resources," and "What's New in Assistive Devices." The conference will be at the Crossroads Rehabilitation Center in Indianapolis. The training fee is $75, but scholarships are available. Space is limited. JULY 31-AUG. 2: INDIANA LAND CARE EXPO

The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and the Indiana Land Improvement Contractors Association are co-sponsoring this three-day expo to educate the public on land care. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, visitors can see land care displays and watch the construction of farm ponds, animal waste lagoons, gardens and home orchards at a farm near Shelbyville. There is no admission charge. The Land Care Expo will be at the farm of Jeff and Trisha Stevens. Take Interstate 74 to Exit 123, eight miles south of Shelbyville. The road loops back two miles to County Road 725 E. The farm is on the left side of this road. AUG. 6-19: INDIANA STATE FAIR

The annual Indiana State Fair offers a variety of activities for families at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. In addition to the 4-H exhibits, Purdue Agriculture will return to the Pioneer Our Land Pavilion with displays and interactive exhibits centered around how we feed the world. Advance tickets can be purchased for $4 at Marsh Supermarkets, Revco Drugs, Indiana Farm Bureau, Signature Inn and the Indiana State Fair Box Office. Tickets at the door are $5. AUG. 19: JASPER COUNTY CO-OP TECHNOLOGY TOUR

Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and Jasper County Co-Op present sessions on ragweed control and site management at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Boswell. Farmers will visit sites treated for ragweed and learn how to use variables to help with site management. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and tours begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration and lunch are free, but an RSVP should be made with either the Benton, Warren or Tippecanoe Extension offices by Aug. 15. AUG. 26: DAVIS PURDUE AG CENTER FIELD DAY

The Davis Purdue Ag Center will hold a farm tour and educational presentations, including "Corn and Soybean Herbicides," "Debugging Bt Corn," "Composting Swine," "Leafhopper-Resistant Alfalfa," and "Confined Feeding Regulations." Registration begins at 9 a.m., and tours begin at 9:30 a.m. There is no cost for registration or lunch. The ag center is five miles north of Farmland on State Road 1.
