JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and some newsworthy Purdue-related events during the next two weeks.

Road trips: No joy in the journey for most

If you travel this Independence Day weekend, chances are you'll do it by car and may not enjoy the experience. In a survey by American Demographics, 89 percent of respondents listed something that bothered them about road trips. Among the unpleasantries were traffic jams, mechanical breakdowns, impatient kids and boredom. "There are steps you can take to help reduce some of the hassles of long car trips," says Alastair Morrison, professor of restaurant, hotel, institutional and tourism management. "Involve the kids in planning the trip and they may be more cooperative along the way," he suggests. He says the Internet offers many trip-planning resources that children will enjoy. "Give yourself enough time so that you can stop at sights along the way that the kids help pick out," he says. He says you also can entertain youngsters during the ride with a TV and video player.
