"Our audience wanted NPR and was willing to help offset the costs of bringing some of the programs back to the station," Dan Skinner, WBAA station manager, said. "We have been able to add NPR programs that will interest both our news and classical music listeners."
Initially, seven shows will be available to the Greater Lafayette community. On AM 920, news programs "Morning Edition" and "Weekend Edition" return, in addition to "All Things Considered," "Living on Earth," and "Sounds Like Science." FM 101.3 will add "Performance Today" and "NPR World of Opera" to its music-intensive lineup.
The station's first ever, on-air membership drive and fund-raising campaign has been so successful that these programs were brought back much faster than expected. So far, through a combination of on-air, direct mail and corporate fund-raising efforts, $240,810 in donations and pledges has been raised. To sustain NPR and other programming, the stations will continue to hold on-air fund-raising campaigns every fall and spring.
"Our membership drive hasn't ended," Skinner said. "We will ask our listeners for ongoing support for these shows as well as additional NPR programs."
WBAA-AM, a news and information station, has been broadcasting since 1922 and was the first licensed radio station in the state. WBAA-FM went on the air in 1993 and focuses on fine arts programming.
