JOURNALISTS: The following are newsworthy Purdue-related events during the next two weeks.

Camp Calcium studies bones and racial differences

A three-week summer camp for African-American girls will feature research looking into the differences in bone structure between blacks and whites. African-Americans have greater bone density than whites, a phenomenon that is largely unexplained, according to Connie Weaver, professor of foods and nutrition and head researcher for the Camp Calcium project. From June 21 through July 12, African -American girls ages 11 to 13 will be on the Purdue campus participating in many camp-like activities. Unlike normal camps, these girls will also be studied for calcium intake and retention. "Understanding the underlying racial differences in bone density may provide the means for attaining higher bone mass for all," Weaver says.
