JUNE 16-27: AN INTERNATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM IN NEW CROPS

This two-week program -- An International Training Program in New Crops: Aromatic and Medicinal Plants -- at the West Lafayette campus will benefit those seeking in-depth training in economic botany, horticulture and agronomy, processing, and in the pharmaceutical and industrial products area. Sponsored by the Center for New Crops and Plant Products, Purdue University and the Program for Collaborative Research in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Illinois, Chicago. Cost is $1,900. JUNE 18: PURDUE HAY DAY

The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Howard County Fairgrounds and features sessions on potato leafhopper-resistant alfalfa, balage, forage rest, seeding alfalfa with fluid fertilizer and producing quality forage. There also will be a producer panel on developing and maintaining a successful cash crop hay business. The afternoon sessions will feature equipment demonstrations from more than a dozen equipment companies. A hay quality contest also will be part of the event. The free event is sponsored by the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service and the Indiana Forage Council. There is a $6 fee for lunch. CONTACT: Keith Johnson, (765) 494-4800.

JUNE 23: INDIANA WINEGROWERS GUILD SUMMER MEETING

The meeting will be at 1 p.m. at Chateau Pomije Vineyard and Winery in Guilford. It will feature a vineyard tour/workshop and cookout. CONTACT: Bruce Bordelon, (765) 494-8212

JUNE 23-25: STATE 4-H ROUND-UP

"The Power of 4-H" is the theme for this year's Round-up. It will feature fun and learning with all activities focusing on how to have respect for yourself and others as you strive to be your personal best. There will be more than 100 classes offered by 12 schools of study at Purdue. 4-H members must be 14 years old to attend. Fee is $75, not including meals. JUNE 24-26: TREE PEST AND DISEASE DIAGNOSTIC WORKSHOP

The course will provide hands-on experience in diagnosing tree pests and diseases under field conditions. Continuing education credits are available. The workshop and field trips will be held on and around the Purdue campus. Space is limited and the session costs $150. JUNE 25: PINNEY PURDUE AG CENTER FIELD DAY

Crop diagnostics is the focus of the Pinney PAC field day with sessions on weed and herbicide damage identification and corn and soybean disease diagnosis. Concurrent sessions on pest resistant crops, soil compaction and biotech crops will be offered in the afternoon. Participants will receive a Corn and Soybean Field Guide. Pinney PAC is located 5 miles east of Valparaiso, a half mile north off U.S. 30 on County Line Road. JUNE 26: NORTHEAST PURDUE AG CENTER (NEPAC) FIELD DAY

The event begins at 3 p.m. at NEPAC in Whitley County and features field tours on perennial weed control, pesticide safety, wheat management, alfalfa management and more. The field day also features the classroom sessions "Managing Employees Successfully," "Useful Products for the Yard and Garden" and "Who Gets Grandma's Yellow Pie Plate or Grandpa's Pocket Watch?" Purdue University agricultural economist Chris Hurt will give the keynote address "Ag Outlook." The program has been approved for up to two CCHs for category 1A and 1O commercial pesticide applicators and two pest management CEUs and 0.5 crop production CEUs for Certified Crop Advisors. JULY 11-12: PLANT HEALTH CARE WORKSHOP

The 1997 Midwest Plant Health Care Workshop, to be held at the Hampton Inn in Indianapolis, is sponsored by the Indiana Arborist Association and Purdue University. Intended for experienced professionals, the sessions will cover plant care programs for residential, commercial and municipal properties. Cost is $150. The workshop qualifies for certified arborist continuing education units. Space is limited and preregistration is required by July 4. CONTACT: Rita McKenzie, (765) 494-3625.

JULY 24-25: CROP DIAGNOSTIC TRAINING

These sessions at the Purdue Agronomy Research Center, about five miles west of West Lafayette, are designed to help all crop producers -- especially those interested in Integrated Crop Management or the Certified Crop Adviser Program. These programs will address crop problem development and its relationship with crop growth to help producers identify insect, herbicide, nutrition and environmental problems in corn and soybean fields. The July 24 session will be repeated July 25. Space is limited, and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The fee is $90 per person per day.
