WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Emily Mobley, dean of libraries and professor of library science at Purdue University, has been named the Esther Ellis Norton Distinguished Professor in Library Science.
"A distinguished professorship is the ultimate peer recognition for faculty," said Robert L. Ringel, executive vice president for academic affairs. "It is a key element in our retention and recruitment of simply stellar performers, and another way for us to recognize exceptional performance in teaching, research and service."
Purdue now has 40 distinguished professors.
Mobley, Purdue's first dean of libraries, is responsible for the administration of 15 libraries on campus, plus the University Press. The system serves more than 40,000 patrons each year with 2.2 million volumes and more than a thousand electronic information files. In addition, she oversees development and fund-raising activities as well as providing an entrepreneurial information service for corporate clients.
Mobley is chairwoman of the State University Library Automation Network, is on the corporation visiting committee for libraries at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a past president of the Special Libraries Association, has been on the board of directors of the Association of Research Libraries, and is a member of the American Library Association.
A librarian for more than 30 years, Mobley was the library director for the GMI Engineering and Management Institute in Flint, Mich., before coming to Purdue in 1986.
The Purdue Board of Trustees awarded the distinguished professorship at its meeting Saturday (5/31).
