Beering: State budget 'a missed opportunity'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- On the state budget approved by the Indiana General Assembly on May 15, Purdue University President Steven C. Beering had this statement:

"I am disappointed that the state of Indiana is turning its back on higher education and economic development with this budget. In reality, it provides only a 3.6 percent increase in operating funds through the 1997-99 biennium for Purdue and the other six state-assisted colleges and universities. This unfortunately will result in reduced purchasing power. What is especially troubling is that at a time when the state is in an extremely healthy fiscal position, the budget represents a missed opportunity to enhance the well-documented educational and economic-development impact our state universities have on people, business, industry and farms throughout Indiana."
