1. NAT SOUND UP FULL SOUND FROM INFANT CRYING
2. NAT SOUND
CG: Home Hospital, Lafayette, IN For premature babies, coming into the world is quite a shock. In addition to health problems, they must cope with loud noises, bright lights, and other stimuli before they're fully developed and ready.
3. NAT SOUND UP FULL SOUND FROM STIMULATION ROOM
4. NAT SOUND This assault on the senses was re-created for nurses and nursing students in a collaborative study by Purdue University's School of Nursing and Lafayette's Home Hospital.
5. SOT
CG: Sharon Wilkerson, Associate Professor, Purdue School of Nursing Normally the infant would be growing in the mother's tummy in a nice dark environment that muffled sounds. They suddenly have a lot of stimulation going on. So we let the staff and students experience that stimulation . . . Then we took blood pressure.
6. NAT SOUND UP FULL SOUND FROM WOMB ROOM
7. NAT SOUND The nurses and students were also immersed in a womb room -- with dimmed lights, soothing music, a lava lamp, and a soft chair, pillows and blankets. Each participant's blood pressure was taken again.
8. SOT
CG: Diana Munson, Head Nurse, Neonatal Intensive Care, Home Hospital Everybody's blood pressure dropped. And I think it heightened their perceptions of how much they could manipulate the environment and make it a more peaceful, restful, growing kind of place for infants.
9. NAT SOUND
CG: Courtesy Purdue University As a result, the hospital implemented neonatal changes, including less lighting and covered isolettes to reduce noise and light, and eliminated unnecessary stimulation. Wilkerson says these changes improve the babies' health.
10. SOT (Wilkerson) They're spending their energies on growing instead of trying to take care of their environment. . . . They're not having as many negative effects, and they're gaining weight better.
11. NAT SOUND I'm Dan Skinner.
