Purdue faculty, students send books to Chinese university

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Faculty and students in Purdue University's Department of Child Development and Family Studies reached halfway around the world recently to support early childhood education colleagues in Nanjing, People's Republic of China.

Last year a Purdue professor became aware of the shortage of books and journals in the Department of Early Childhood Education at Nanjing Normal University. This spring, Purdue faculty donated recent books and journals from their bookshelves, and the students in Purdue's Association for the Education of Young Children raised money to ship the materials to China.

"I am sure the books will be used well here," said Jianhong Wang, professor at Nanjing Normal. "We are all moved by those students who donated money for shipping the books." The books will be placed in the department's reference room and made available to faculty and students there.

James Elicker, assistant professor in child development and family studies at Purdue, became aware of the need while lecturing last spring at the Chinese university. "This is a great way for us to expand our global awareness, to make personal connections with early childhood professionals in China, and to contribute to an atmosphere of international cooperation," he said.

The response of the Purdue faculty was so generous that more materials were donated than could be shipped, he said.
