Director named for central Extension district

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service director Henry A. Wadsworth has named Janet Gordon to be district director and program coordinator for Indiana's central Extension district, effective June 1. The district encompasses 17 counties.

"We're delighted Janet has accepted the position, and we know the program will continue to develop under her leadership," Wadsworth said.

The state's five district directors provide leadership that fosters teamwork and capitalizes on the expertise of Extension educators in developing educational programs on high-priority problems and issues. Program areas include agriculture and natural resources, 4-H youth development, community development, and consumer and family sciences. The Extension Service provides research-based information in these areas from Purdue to help enhance the quality of life for all of the state's residents.

Since February 1996, Gordon has been assistant program leader for Purdue's School of Consumer and Family Sciences. Earlier, she served as acting assistant director and dean of the school, a specialist in leadership development, and an Extension educator in Boone and Hendricks counties. She also has held positions as homemakers services supervisor for the state of Illinois, an Extension adviser in Champaign County, Ill., and assistant buyer for Carson, Pirie Scott and Co. in Urbana, Ill.

Gordon has a bachelor's degree in home economics from Indiana State University and a master's degree in adult education from Ball State University.

Among awards Gordon has received are: Epsilon Sigma Phi's Distinguished Service Award, Mid Career Award for the North Central Region, and Meritorious Service Award; the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service Association's Junior Specialist Award; the Indiana Extension Agents Association Team Award; the National Association of Extension Home Economics Distinguished Service Award; and Boone County Children's Champion Award.

She belongs to the Association of Leadership Educators, Indiana Council on Family Relations, American Association of Family and Consumer Services, National Association of Family and Consumer Services, Epsilon Sigma Phi Extension honorary, and Purdue University Cooperative Extension Specialists Association.
