Carmel native earns scholarship to Cambridge

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Fleming T. Ray of Carmel , a December graduate with a degree in materials engineering from Purdue University, has earned a Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship to study chemical engineering for a year at Cambridge University in England.

Ray is one of 10 winners chosen from applicants from 57 American colleges and universities. The Churchill scholarships, based on academic performance and capacity for original and creative work, enable outstanding American students to do graduate work in engineering, mathematics and science at Churchill College of Cambridge. The scholarship, valued at more than $20,000, covers all tuition and fees and includes a living allowance and travel grant.

Ray, who finished his Purdue studies in three and a half years, will begin the one-year program at Cambridge in October. At the end of the school year, he will earn a certificate of postgraduate study in chemical engineering.

"It's a wonderful opportunity," said Ray. "I want to find new ways to address environmental issues, this will help me add an international perspective to my research on environmental sustainability.

"The goal is to find new ways to use our natural resources. We need to develop a method of living which is viable over the long term. This necessitates stewardship of our natural resources to avoid shortages."

After returning from England, Ray will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to pursue a Ph.D. His work at MIT will be partially funded for three years by a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship of $15,000 per year.

While at Purdue, Ray concentrated on more than hitting the books. He revived the Purdue Engineering Magazine after a two-year hiatus, organized outreach programs with the Purdue Engineering Student Council, was a founding member and president of the Dean of Engineering Student Advisory Council, and volunteered at a homeless shelter for three years.

Ray also is a member of Alpha Sigma Mu, the national materials engineering honor society; Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society; and the Mortar Board Leadership Council.
