Faculty cited at honors convocation
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Outstanding teaching during the 1996-97 academic year at Purdue
University was recognized Friday (4/18) at the University Honors Convocation.
The annual awards ceremony in Elliott Hall of Music honors outstanding faculty members
universitywide and in each of the undergraduate schools. Additionally, all the university's
Dean's List or Semester Honors students from the 1996 spring and fall semesters were recognized, as were winners of year-end student and staff awards.
Five faculty members received Purdue University Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching
Awards in Memory of Charles B. Murphy. Each $3,000 award -- the university's highest
undergraduate teaching honor -- is given for exemplary teaching performance in all
phases of undergraduate instruction on Purdue's West Lafayette campus.
The 1997 winners are:
- Ann H. Hunt, associate professor of nursing.
- Issam Mudawar, professor of mechanical engineering.
- Nicholas Kregotis Rauh, associate professor of history.
- Mary A. Sadowski, professor of technical graphics.
- Matthew P. Stephens, associate professor of industrial technology.
Academic school teaching awards and the recipients are:
- School of Agriculture Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, Carole A. Lembi,
professor of aquatic biology and weed science.
- Mary L. Matthews Awards for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching (School of Consumer
and Family Sciences), Lynn R. Okagaki, associate professor of child development and
family studies; and John R. Rousselle, associate professor of restaurant, hotel,
institutional and tourism management.
- School of Education Outstanding Teacher Award, James D. Lehman, professor of curriculum
and instruction.
- A.A. Potter Best of Engineering Teachers Awards (Schools of Engineering), Charles
M. Krousgrill Jr., associate professor of mechanical engineering; and George R. Wodicka,
associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.
- School of Health Sciences Award for Excellence in Teaching, Robert R. Landolt, professor
of bionucleonics.
- School of Liberal Arts Educational Excellence Award, Randy W. Roberts, professor
of history and American studies.
- School of Management Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Award, J. Douglas Bowman,
assistant professor of management.
- Excellence in Teaching Award in the School of Nursing, LaNelle E. Geddes, professor
of nursing.
- School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences Professor Henry W. Heine Award for Excellence
in Teaching, Nicholas G. Popovich, professor of pharmacy practice.
- School of Science Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, Stephen F. Konieczny,
professor of biological sciences.
- School of Technology James G. Dwyer Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching,
Bernard W. Wulle, assistant professor of aviation technology.
- School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award, S. Kathleen Salisbury,
associate professor of small animal surgery.
Other faculty award recipients are:
- Flora L. Williams, associate professor of family and consumer economics, won the
Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion Award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize. The Schleman
Award is for significant contributions to students at the university.
- Gregory B. Martin, associate professor of agronomy, was named the 1997 winner of
the $3,000 Herbert Newby McCoy Award for contributions to the field of science.
- Fred E. Lytle, professor of chemistry, was recognized as the Carnegie Foundation
for the Advancement of Teaching 1996 Indiana Professor of the Year. He received a
certificate and $1,000 award last fall when his selection was announced.
- Edward J. Coyle and Leah J. Jamieson, both professors of electrical and computer
engineering, were cited as co-winners of the Class of 1922 Helping Students Learn
Award for their work in developing EPICS, Engineering Projects in Community Service.
Each received a $1,500 prize and $500 academic expense account. At the Purdue Alumni Association's
Founders Day Banquet on Saturday, April 26, both will receive Helping Students Learn
Award crystal trophies.
