Seven Purdue students receive $2,460 leadership awards
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Seven Purdue University students received Charles O. McGaughey
Leadership Awards today (Friday, 4/18) during the University Honors Convocation.
Each student received an unrestricted cash award of $2,460. The recipients are Cory
Ann Armstrong, Carmel
, Misty Lynn Best, Georgetown
, Julia Michele Blatnak, Mequon, Wis.
, Amy Suzanne Bredhold, Jasper
, Jill Marie Hoffman, Jasper
; Tara Catherine Lagu, Carmel
, and Glenn Robert Noll, Wolcottville
.
McGaughey, a 1939 Purdue graduate from Indianapolis
, established the award to honor undergraduates who show leadership abilities and
an appreciation of basic American values through service to the community and the
university. McGaughey co-founded the Indiana-based MCL Cafeteria chain. He died in
1992. The first awards were presented in 1991.
Recipients must have completed at least two years of study at Purdue while maintaining
a B average and have an appreciation of the values of liberty, the democratic form
of government, and the importance of respect for others and for the diversity of
the United States.
Here are the details about the winners:
- Armstrong is a senior in the School of Liberal Arts honors program. She has held
leadership positions in several student organizations including Old Masters, Residence
Hall Council, Order of Omega and Kappa Alpha Theta. She is a member of several academic honor organizations including Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Alpha and
Golden Gavel.
- Best is a senior in the School of Liberal Arts honors program. She has been president
of Panhellenic Association, the largest student organization for women at Purdue.
She also has held two offices in the School of Liberal Arts Student Council.
- Blatnak is a senior in the School of Chemical Engineering. She has been president
of Mortar Board and director of the Engineering Forum for the Engineering Student
Council. She has been active in the Mauzy Leadership Mentor Program and coordinated
the travel and participation of a group of 35 students to the National Conference for College
Women Student Leaders last summer.
- Bredhold is a senior in the School of Liberal Arts. She has been president of the
Purdue Student Union Board and is president-elect of the American Society of Interior
Designers. She is first vice president for Zeta Tau Alpha social sorority and is
active in Iron Key, Mortar Board and Faskillitators. She also served as assistant to the
director of the Undergraduate Studies Program.
- Hoffman is a senior in the School of Management. She chaired the annual Mortar Board
Leadership Conference this semester. She was vice president of operations and vice
president of risk management for the Panhellenic Association. She has been Order
of Omega vice president and a hostess for the Old Masters program.
- Lagu will earn a degree from the School of Pharmacy in May. She has been vice president
of the Health Careers Student Council and captain of the women's soccer team. She
chaired the Mortar Board Leadership Conference during the spring 1996 semester. She
has been active in Purdue Student Government, Faskillitators and Purdue Preview Days.
- Noll is a senior in the School of Agriculture. While at Purdue he has been president
of the Agriculture Student Council, Purdue Young Farmers, Chauncey Cooperative House
and the Student Cooperative Housing Association. He was vice president of allocations for Mortar Board and was active in the Student Agriculture Alumni Association.
