Annual Violet Haas Award winners announced

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University's Council on the Status of Women has named three award winners for 1997.

Joan L. Marshall, associate dean of the School of Liberal Arts, has been named the 1997 Violet Haas Award winner; Purdue's Health Promotion Program has been given the Violet Haas Program Award; and Patricia A. Carlisle, director of student support services at Purdue North Central, received the Violet Haas Regional Campus Award.

Winners will be officially recognized during an open reception at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 28 in Room 116 of the Agriculture and Research Building.

The Violet Haas Award was established seven years ago to honor Haas, a faculty member in Purdue's School of Electrical Engineering from 1962 until her death in 1986, who promoted women's issues and provided a positive role model for the university's faculty, staff and students. The council uses the awards to recognize a department, program or individual for demonstrated efforts in promoting the advancement of women in the university.

Marshall is being recognized as someone who has shown a deep commitment to women's issues. She has developed affirmative action initiatives within the School of Liberal Arts, has participated on the advisory groups for the Spousal Relocation Assistance Program and the University Task Force on Women's Issues, and has worked to help prevent sexual harassment at the university.

The Haas award for programs goes to the University Health Center's Health Promotion Program in recognition of its contributions to the women of Purdue. The council recognized the 1997 Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention Program. "Celebrating EveryBODY" was designed to lobby for social change by celebrating the diversity of body shapes and sizes.

Carlisle is being recognized for her work with the Women's Programming Committee and the "Return to Learn" program at the North Central Campus. "Return to Learn" targets women who are returning to school after a long absence. It is designed to give women the confidence to return to school while juggling the demands of a family and a job.
