EDITORS: This calendar lists events on Purdue's West Lafayette campus or involving people or programs off campus during the next four weeks. Events are free and open to the public, except where noted, and all are open to news media coverage. New or updated listings have two asterisks (**).

• Wednesday, April 9. The 66th annual Literary Awards Banquet. 7 p.m. East and West Faculty Lounge, Purdue Memorial Union. Writer Russell Banks will be the featured speaker. Tickets: $11 for students, $17 for others; on sale at the English department office in Heavilon Hall. (NOTE: Ticket prices have been changed.)

• Monday, April 14. Women in Engineering Career Day for high-school juniors. Cost: $10 per person. Registration deadline is April 7. Students get information about the various areas of engineering and talk with practicing women engineers and Purdue women engineering students and faculty. Parents are invited to attend with their daughters. Sponsored by Schools of Engineering and the Society of Women Engineers. • Friday-Sunday, April 18-20. Bug Bowl. Roach races, an insect petting zoo, insect crafts, honey tasting, butterfly exhibits and more. The event also features a cooking-with-insects contest, a cake-decorating contest, and a contest to decorate a Volkswagen Beetle as an insect. Registration is required for the cooking and the cake-decorating contests. Bug Bowl is held in and around the Entomology Building as part of the Ag Open House. 4:30-6:30 p.m. April 18; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 19; and noon-4 p.m. April 20. • Saturday, April 19. The 84th Annual Horticulture Show. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Horticulture building. Display gardens, landscaping ideas, a question-and-answer booth, horticulture therapy, and plants for sale will be featured. Children's activities include face painting, planting flowers and vegetables, and making bird feeders. Part of the annual Ag Open House.

• Saturday, April 19. Department of Agronomy Open House. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Lily Hall of Life Sciences. Activities include painting with soil-based paints, a hands-on soil-texture guessing game, and a rainfall simulation that demonstrates the different effects of rainfall on bare soil vs. planted soil. Part of the annual Ag Open House.

• Saturday, April 19. School of Veterinary Medicine Open House. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Lynn Hall. Activities include exotic animal exhibits, oxen team demos, S.M.A.R.T. (a canine search and rescue team), and a milking contest.

• Saturday, April 19. Department of Forestry and Natural Resources Open House. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Forestry and Forestry Products buildings. Activities and displays about Indiana's natural resources and timber industry will be featured. Lafayette's Colombian Park Zoo also will have live animals present at the open house. Part of the annual Ag Open House.

  ** Saturday, April 19. Brick Bowl. 10 a.m. In front of the Horticulture Building. Teams of landscape architecture students will try to convert 250 bricks and some mortar into mailboxes they had designed earlier.

• Saturday, April 19. Qualifications for the 40th Purdue Grand Prix. Noon to 6 p.m. at the kart track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. The race will be run Saturday, April 26.

• Saturday, April 19. Science Undergraduate Research Day. Students display posters to showcase undergraduate research projects in science. 1-3:30 p.m., Room 218 Stewart Center. Sponsored by the School of Science.

• Saturday, April 19. University Sing competition. 1:30 p.m. Ballrooms of Purdue Memorial Union. About 20 student organizations will compete. Sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board.

• Saturday and Sunday, April 19-20. Boiler Barnyard. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Smith Hall. Activities include sheep-shearing demonstrations, milking demonstrations, drawings, interactive displays, and children's games. Organized by the Animal Science Ambassadors. Part of the annual Ag Open House.

• Monday, April 21. Qualifications for the 40th Purdue Grand Prix. Noon to 6 p.m. at the kart track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. The race will be run Saturday, April 26.

  ** Saturday, April 26. Army ROTC Hall of Fame induction ceremony and reception, 9:30 a.m. in the Armory. A Gala Week activity.

  ** Saturday, April 26. The 1997 class parade and memorial service at John Purdue's grave, including the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the Class of 1946 for its part in redesigning the grave site. 11 a.m. A Gala Week activity. Tradition states the oldest living alumnus present leads the parade. Reunion classes will assemble between 10:30 and 10:45 a.m.

  ** Saturday, April 26. Academy Park Dedication, 11:30 a.m. Academy Park is Purdue's newest green space, in honor of all Purdue faculty. It will be used as an outdoor teaching arena and leisure area. The new park is bounded by Stewart Center, Memorial Mall, the Purdue Memorial Union and the Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry. A Gala Week activity.

  ** Saturday, April 26. University Bands Department luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Elliott Hall of Music Stage. Luncheon is the launch of the department's first capital campaign. Tickets are $12 from the University Bands office at (765) 494-0770 until April 18. A Gala Week activity.

• Saturday, April 26. 40th Purdue Grand Prix. Main race to begin about 2:30 p.m. on the kart track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. Sprint race for final qualifications to begin about noon. Alumni race to start about 1:20 p.m. Tickets $5 in advance, $6 at the gate. A Gala Week activity.

  ** Saturday, April 26. Founders Day Reception and Banquet. The reception will be 4:45-5:45 p.m. in the main lounges of Purdue Memorial Union. The 6 p.m. banquet in the North and South ballrooms of the union will feature Purdue President Steven C. Beering, entertainment by the Purdue Varsity Glee Club and special alumni awards.
