National Academy of Engineering adds two from Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The National Academy of Engineering has inducted a professor and an alumnus from Purdue University. Milton E. Harr and Charles J. Pankow are among 85 engineers elected to the academy this year.

Election into the academy is among the highest professional distinctions given to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made "important contributions to engineering theory and practice" and those who have demonstrated "unusual accomplishment in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology."

Harr is a professor of soil mechanics. He is recognized for the development and dissemination of analyses of geotechnical engineering systems. Harr has worked extensively with the Army Corps of Engineers and has served as a consultant to identify and correct problems on dams and locks. He has been with Purdue for 42 years and has written four textbooks, including "Groundwater Seepage: The Theoretical Basis and Design of Dams."

Pankow is the chairman and chief executive officer of Charles Pankow Builders, Altadena, Calif. , and is a distinguished alumnus from Purdue. Pankow was honored for his contributions to the application of innovation in construction engineering. He is well-known for his design/build process where the developer or owner contracts with a single company to complete an entire project, from design to construction. Pankow holds two patents and has received the American Concrete Institute's Roger H. Corbetta Award for innovative methods in the use of concrete.
