A conference room on the first floor of Hovde Hall will be renamed in Lyon's honor with a brief ceremony at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the hallway/lobby area just outside Room 102, Hovde Hall. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled in appreciation of Lyon's three decades of service to Purdue in the business services, fiscal affairs and management information areas of the university. The public is invited.
A university fellowship program that enables staff members to pursue master's degrees through the Krannert Graduate School of Management Saturday Master's Program already has been renamed in Lyon's memory. The conference room dedication also will mark the start of a fund-raising drive for the Howard S. Lyon Endowment, the income of which will be used for professional development activities by Business Services and other staff members at Purdue.
"Howard Lyon served Purdue with great distinction, and his loss was deeply felt by all his colleagues," said Frederick R. Ford, executive vice president and treasurer. "These memorial and educational initiatives will serve to enhance his legacy to Purdue."
Lyon earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Franklin College in 1964 and began his Purdue career the same year as a business office trainee. He served as business representative for the Department of Education and business administrator of the School of Humanities, Social Science, and Education. In universitywide service, he was budget director, then director of fiscal planning, a position that included responsibility for representing Purdue's interests to the Indiana General Assembly. Lyon capped his Purdue career serving in two senior administrative positions: vice president for business services and assistant treasurer (1985-93); and vice president for management information and long-range budget planning, from 1993 until his death in 1995.
