Calendar for Journalists March 14, 1997

JOURNALISTS: Here are some newsworthy Purdue events during the next two weeks.

Aerospace defense commander to speak at Purdue

Gen. Howell M. Estes III, commander in chief of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the U.S. Space Command, will address the annual military convocation at Purdue at 6 p.m. Monday, March 24, in Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. He will present a policy speech about the military and non-military uses of space during the 21st century. Estes is a 1965 graduate of the Air Force Academy. During his career, he has flown 169 combat missions and commanded operations and maintenance squadrons, including the Air Force's only stealth fighter unit. Prior to his current position, Estes served as director of operations (J-3) for the Joint Staff in Washington, D.C. Tuesday-Thursday, March 25-27.
Purdue Road School. Stewart Center. More than 1,200 people -- from street commissioners to mayors to highway engineers -- will learn about what's new and talk about what could be for Indiana's roads and highways. Sessions run 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, and 9-11 a.m. Thursday. Some highlights:

Lt. Governor Joseph E. Kernan will be the keynote speaker at the opening session, 10 a.m. March 25.

Curtis Wiley, commissioner for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) discusses directions for INDOT, also will be part of the opening session March 25.

Efforts to improve quality in transportation construction, 8:30 a.m. March 26.

The use of intelligent transportation systems, 1:45 p.m. March 26.

The state's efforts to procure federal funds, 10:30 a.m. March 27.
