The original Academy of Ancient Music was established in the 18th century for the purpose of performing "old" music -- defined by its director as anything composed more than 20 years earlier. Its performances, known as King's Concerts, were well attended by London society until 1848.
The modern revival of the Academy of Ancient Music was founded by Hogwood in 1973 to give audiences an experience of music as it might have sounded at the time it was written. The ensemble brings together specialists in every branch of baroque and classical performance style, playing instruments of the appropriate period.
Kirkby performs throughout the world singing "early" music. The Toronto Globe and Mail writes: "For two decades, Kirkby's clear, agile voice has epitomized the pure sound of early music singing. She remains one of the treasures of the music world."
