Jazz All-Stars to play March 28 at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Detroit Jazz All-Stars will play one concert at 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, in Loeb Playhouse.

The All-Stars are Kenny Burrell, guitar; Frank Foster, saxophone; Hank Jones, piano; and Marcus Belgrave on trumpet. The four musicians are all solo performers who are playing together only twice --the other performance is a benefit in Detroit.

Burrell returns to Purdue for the first time since performing with Tommy Flanagan on the Convocations Jazz series in 1992. Foster is the current leader of the Count Basie Orchestra. Jones has performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Barbara Streisand, Carol Burnett and in the Benny Goodman Big Band. Belgrave started a collaboration with musician Ray Charles at the age of 18 that lasted over a decade. He also has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Sammy Davis Jr. and Charles Mingus.

The concert is the final "Jazz Set" event of the season for Purdue Convocations. The performance is also supported by the Friends of Convocations and United Technologies.

Tickets are $19 for the public and $12.50 for Purdue students at campus box offices or Ticketmaster. Charge by telephone at (765) 494-3933 or 800-914-SHOW.
