Speech study seeks preschool subjects

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Preschool children with a disability called specific language impairment are being sought for a summer research program at Purdue University.

The study needs children identified as having the impairment. They will have non-verbal cognitive abilities within the normal range, but their spoken language -- and in some cases their comprehension -- will be significantly below that of other children their age.

Distinguished Professor Laurence B. Leonard and Lisa Goffman, assistant professor of audiology and speech sciences, will direct the study in two four-week sessions at Heavilon Hall. Each participant will attend one session only. The first session is scheduled for June 16 to July 11, and the second will be held July 14 to Aug. 8.

Youngsters age four to six who are accepted for the study will participate in a variety of research activities from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The activities are designed to be pleasant experiences for the children, and the daily routine will include language therapy conducted by clinicians and students from the Department of Audiology and Speech Sciences.

There is no fee to participate, but the program is limited to 24 children. For more information, contact Leonard at (765) 494-3794, or Goffman at (765) 494-3796.
