Dairy Association honors producers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State Dairy Association (ISDA) presented Meritorious Herd Awards to 115 superior Indiana dairy farms Feb. 14 at the 107th ISDA annual meeting in Indianapolis. Milk Production Improvement Awards and Certificates of Production were awarded as well.

According to Robert E. Jones, service coordinator of the ISDA, the 1996 Meritorious Herd Awards bring the number given since 1917 -- the first year they were given -- to 13,890. The ISDA determined these awards in cooperation with the dairy Extension division of Purdue University's Department of Animal Sciences.

Twenty-seven gold and 88 silver merit awards were given for herds of 15 or more animals. Gold awards start at 125 percent of breed average for either milk, fat or protein, and silver awards start at 112.5 percent of breed average. The awards are for herd production from October 1995 through September 1996. Recipients, listed by the Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) are:

The Milk Production Improvement Award recognizes improvement in a herd's average milk production. The rolling herd average milk production of the winning dairy herds in September 1996 was 2,000 or more pounds of Energy Corrected Milk higher than the previous year, according to the ISDA. Only eight of 704 herds on DHIA tests were able to show improvement. Those Indiana dairy families, listed by DHIA, receiving this award are:
