Notre Dame lecturers to discuss student service

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Two experts on partnering students with social service agencies will talk about their efforts during a lecture at Purdue University on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Kathy Royer and Kathleen Maas Weigert of the Center for Social Concerns at the University of Notre Dame will make their presentation from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Room 2290 of the Liberal Arts and Education Building. Their talk is titled "University Community Partnerships: The Problems and Promise of a Pedagogy."

Royer is director of the community and partnerships and service learning program, and Weigert is associate director for academic affairs and research.

"We invited them to come to Purdue after students in my 'Politics and Poverty' course visited Notre Dame to see the kind of service-learning opportunities that exist for students there," said Mark Gibney, professor of political science.

Gibney said nearly one-fourth of Notre Dame students engage in some form of service learning. "Usually they work as volunteers for social service agencies, and often they do the work in conjunction with a class," he said.

"We would like students, faculty and members of local social service agencies to attend the talk. We hope it's instrumental in encouraging more students at Purdue to attempt some form of service learning."
