Opera classic coming to Purdue Feb. 28

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Giacomo Puccini's opera classic "La Boheme" takes the stage at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at Purdue University. The performance in Elliott Hall of Music by the New York City Opera National Company is sponsored by Purdue Convocations with support from Cox Communications.

"La Boheme" is a glimpse at the lives, loves, sorrows and joys of four impoverished artists living on the Left Bank in Paris in the early 19th century. The National Company's production has been applauded by New York's Newsday as a "well-mounted, strongly sung and intelligently directed production."

The entire opera will be performed in Italian with English supertitles projected above the stage -- a trademark of the New York City Opera National Company. The supertitles, on individual slides, are projected a line or two at a time onto a screen just below the proscenium. The process is designed to paraphrase enough of the text to clarify the action without intruding upon the drama or vocal performance.

Tickets are $26, $21 and $15 for the public and $16 and $11 for Purdue students. Family Circle tickets (second balcony) are $7 and $5. All tickets are on sale at campus box offices and Ticketmaster outlets. Charge by telephone at (765) 494-3933 or 800-914-SHOW.
