The scholarships are funded through gifts from BAA Indianapolis LLC, the private company that manages the Indianapolis Airport. The scholarships will provide support to minority students pursuing careers in small business and retail management and ownership. This year, four students will receive $2,000 renewable scholarships. Four students will be added each spring, with a maximum of 16 students at any one time on scholarship through the year 2005.
"As an airport-operating company, BAA Indianapolis LLC is committed to meaningful minority participation in all parts of our business," said David Roberts, airport director. "Concessions, including retail and food and beverage sales, provide many opportunities for new entrepreneurs. We believe that graduates of Purdue's excellent consumer science and retailing programs will be well prepared to become successful business partners of BAA and other airport operators throughout the United States."
To qualify for the scholarships, students must be minorities majoring in retailing, small business management or sales and sales management. Graduating high-school students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.8 on a 4-point scale. To remain eligible, students must maintain a 2.8 GPA for four years and complete at least 28 credit hours per year.
BAA Indianapolis LLC was hired in 1995 to manage the Indianapolis Airport system. It is a subsidiary of BAA plc, a British-based company that owns seven airports in the United Kingdom, including Heathrow and Gatwick in London. Indianapolis International Airport is now the largest privately managed airport in the United States.
