Prof supports Clinton's food safety initiative
President Clinton wants better cooperation between the FDA, CDC and the Agriculture
Department to ensure food safety in the United States. He is asking Congress for
$43 million to fund the joint effort. Bill Evers, associate professor of foods and
nutrition at Purdue University, says "the FDA can use all the help they can get." Evers says
he believes that the federal government has not been spending enough money and man
hours to properly monitor the food supply. Each year 9,000 Americans die from food
poisoning and as many as 33 million are sickened. The money would be used to implement
a seafood safety program; an early warning system for new food pathogens; and for
tracking and research sites in eight states.
