Purdue Jazz Band to perform Feb. 9 with John Hart Quartet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue Jazz Band will host a special guest ensemble, The John Hart Quartet, in a free concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, in Loeb Playhouse.

The quartet, led by guitarist John Hart, was formed in 1992. Performing at major clubs and concert venues across the United States, the group is on tour to promote its latest recording, Bridges, which is due to be released this month on the Concord Records label.

Other members of the quartet are saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist Bill Moring and drummer Andy Watson. Hart, who has performed with such artists as Patti Page, Steve Potter and Jim Pepper, was a member of the Apollo Theater house band in the late 1980s. Potter has performed and recorded with Steely Dan, Paul Motion and the Mingus Big Band.

The Purdue Jazz Band will be directed by Professor Kurt R. Gartner, who will serve as interim director of the jazz program at Purdue this semester. The previous director, Professor Lissa Fleming May, now is the fine arts supervisor for the Waterford School District in Waterford, Mich.
