February 4, 1994 Trustees name scholarship program in honor of BeeringWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University's Presidential Honors Scholarships and Fellowships now will be known as the Steven C. Beering Scholarships and Fellowships in honor of Purdue's president, who inaugurated the program in 1986. The Purdue Board of Trustees on Friday (2/4) approved a resolution authorizing the name change. In presenting the resolution to the board, Chairman J. Timothy McGinley said: "It was President Beering's inspiration and initiative that were the driving force in establishing this important scholarship and fellowship program. The trustees took the initiative to honor Steve Beering in a way that is most appropriate for his exemplary first decade of service to Purdue." Beering has been president of the university since July 1, 1983. The resolution cites Steven and Jane Beering for their dedication to the university, and notes that Beering's "leadership, wisdom and deep love for Purdue have made his administration one of the most important in the history of the university." The scholarship/fellowship program serves as a means of recruiting and recognizing some of Purdue's most outstanding students. The program provides tuition, fees, room and board, and all other school expenses including spending money. If they choose, recipients may retain the scholarship to pursue master's and doctoral degrees at Purdue. It originally was funded with gifts from GTE Corp. and the Bob Bardach Memorial Fund, which was established by Purdue alumni Richard and Marjorie Bardach of Fort Myers, Fla., in memory of their son. The program now is supported through gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations and Purdue alumni clubs. Thirty students have received scholarships or fellowships from the program since its inception. Contact Purdue News Service (765) 494-2096 or purduenews@purdue.edu
