Burke named director of intercollegiate athletics

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.–Morgan J. Burke has been appointed director of intercollegiate athletics at Purdue University, effective Jan. 1, 1993.

Selected from a field of about lOO candidates, Burke currently is vice president, operating and administrative services, for Inland Steel Co.'s Indiana Harbor Works in East Chicago, Ind.

"Morgan Burke will bring a wealth of talents to the demanding responsibilities our director of intercollegiate athletics will face in the l99Os and beyond," said Purdue President Steven C. Beering. "He is a highly successful businessman and extremely well-versed in all the areas I feel are important in this position, including law, business, personnel management and program management. The fact that he also is a dedicated Purdue alumnus and former standout athlete here are additional important factors in our decision."

Burke commented: "It is a tremendous honor to return to my alma mater as athletic director and to have the opportunity to build on the great Purdue tradition. I hope to provide the kind of leadership a nationally respected athletic organization needs. I am confident that President Beering, the trustees, the coaches, the staff and the student-athletes here are committed to winning varsity programs and the highest standards of ethics and academics. I intend to set high goals, work hard and be successful."

Burke holds two Purdue degrees, a bachelor's degree in industrial management and a master's in industrial relations. A member of Phi Beta Kappa as an undergraduate, he also was awarded the Wall Street Journal Award, given to the outstanding Purdue senior in industrial management. He holds a law degree, with distinction, from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

Burke was captain of the Purdue swim team in 1972-73, and was co-recipient of the 1973 Guy "Red" Mackey Award, given annually to the two outstanding Purdue senior athletes. Also as a senior, Burke was named an outstanding college athlete by the College Coaches Association.

Burke, 4O, is a native of Indianapolis and resides in Munster with his wife and three children. He is a member of the American Bar Association and Indiana Bar Association, and is on the boards of directors of the Purdue chapter of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and the Hammond YMCA.

Burke was among the finalists named by a 12-member search committee, chaired by Philip Nelson, professor and head of Purdue's Department of Food Science. The committee included Purdue faculty, staff, students, alumni and representatives from the Greater Lafayette community.

Burke will succeed George King, who retired July 1. John W. Hicks, senior vice president emeritus, has been serving as interim Purdue athletic director.
