April 29, 1981 Burns named Vice President for Physical FacilitiesWest Lafayette, Ind. Kenneth P. Burns, a Purdue University administrator since 1967, will become the university's vice president for physical facilities Oct. 30. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Purdue Board of Trustees. Burns will replace Walter W. Wade, who is retiring after nearly 35 years with Purdue. "Burns was selected because of his outstanding managerial talents and proven record of accomplishments," said Frederick R. Ford, executive vice president and treasurer. Ford added that the Purdue physical plant is large, complex and diverse. Its value is estimated at $440.5 million. "Purdue is nationally recognized for good management, and I am confident that Ken Burns will continue this tradition," Ford said. Starting with Purdue in 1967 as a trainee in the business office, Burns has held several positions. His experience includes a six-year stint as purchasing manager of Indiana University--Purdue University at Fort Wayne. In 1973 he was appointed director of purchases and stores for the West Lafayette campus. Last year he was named director of purchases and service enterprises. Burns was born in Ohio and earned his B.S. degree at Miami University, Oxford. He also is a graduate of the business officer executive development program of Stanford University. In 1979 Burns was named by the United States Jaycees as one of the outstanding young men of America. Currently, Burns is a director of United Way of Greater Lafayette and Tippecanoe County and president of the board of trustees of Central Presbyterian Church. He has held offices with Home Hospital Fair, the Purchasing Management Association of Greater Lafayette and the National Association of Educational Buyers--Indiana Group.
