Purdue TV production resumes with 13 shows in new year

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's weekly news and feature magazine television show returns to the airwaves after the first of the year.

The show, "Discover Purdue," is a half-hour program with 13 installments intended for statewide distribution. Each program will include a campus news update, feature segments and at least one studio interview. The program also will be archived and can be seen on the Web at the Purdue home page and the Purdue Alumni Association page.

Presented jointly by the division of Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP) and the Office of University Relations, the program is scheduled to air weekly beginning Jan. 3 through the end of March.

Studio host for the third straight year is Mike Piggott, Purdue's director of community relations and a former news anchor, news director and general manager at WLFI-TV in West Lafayette. His co-host again this year is Brandi Parisi, FM program director and one of the on-air personalities at WBAA, the university-owned and operated radio station. Tangra (Riggle) Broge, last year's Miss Indiana and a junior majoring in communications, will be the student host. Jim Vruggink, director of special projects in university relations, produces the show with Ed Dunn, producer/director for ITaP.

Vruggink said the start of production for the 2004 season marks the13th year of the program's current half-hour format. It was launched in 1989 as a one-hour live call-in show. The format was revised to its current length and content in 1990.

"'Discover Purdue' is geared toward a general audience but focuses on the university's missions of learning, discovery and engagement," Vruggink said.

Guests on the first four programs include Purdue President Martin C. Jischke the first week, senior writer and author John Norberg the second week, Technical Assistance Program director Dave McKinnis in the third, and Dean Richard A. Cosier of the School of Management in the fourth program.

The program will be shown on four PBS television stations in Indianapolis, Merrillville, Fort Wayne, and Evansville, reaching a total audience of 1,160,000, plus millions more on cable systems throughout Indiana, the Chicago area and one county in Kentucky.

In Lafayette-West Lafayette, the program will be seen starting Jan. 6 every Tuesday at 11 a.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. on Insight Communications Cable (Channel 13).
