Purdue honors Martin Luther King Jr. in monthlong event series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University will offer four programs, including three workshops, to give people an opportunity to serve their community and honor the memory of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. The events are part of Affirming the Dream IX: Acts of Kindness/Acts of Justice 2004.

Affirming the Dream IX events are open to the public and include:

• Gifts-in-Kind Drive: Jan. 5-16. Donations of family health items will be accepted for donation to the Lafayette Food Finders Food Bank in drop boxes located around the Purdue campus and at the Diversity Resource Office. The drive is co-sponsored by the Diversity Resource Office and Housing and Food Services

• Day of Service: Jan. 19, 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers provide service to area agencies and organizations. Lunch will be provided. The event is co-sponsored by the Diversity Resource Office and the Boiler Volunteer Network. Registration is required through the Boiler Volunteer Network or the Diversity Resource Office by Jan. 16.

• Dr. George E. Curry, editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service and Black Press USA.com, will give a speech at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 in Fowler Hall. Curry's speech is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Human Relations.

• Affirming the Dream workshops on Jan. 30-31 include:

– Jan. 30, "Intercultural Communication: The Dreaded Diversity Discussion." A fast-paced interactive session dealing with the challenges of implementing diversity discussions in the classroom. Stewart Center, Room 322, 1-4 p.m., sponsored by the Diversity Resource Office.

– Jan. 30, "A Tour Guide Through the Inclusive Workplace." An interactive session focusing on developing a diversity-friendly work environment. Stewart Center, Room 322, 9-11:30 a.m., sponsored by the Diversity Resource Office.

– Jan. 31, "Honoring Inclusion on Campus." A student-centered interactive workshop on intergroup relations. Hillenbrand Residence Hall, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., sponsored by the Diversity Resource Office and residence halls.
