December 17, 2003 Indiana Horticultural Congress offers fruitful programWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana Horticultural Congress will provide commercial producers, processors and agribusiness representatives educational seminars and a trade show featuring more than 75 Midwest agribusinesses. The annual program will take place Jan. 26-28 at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Indianapolis. "Since horticulture is such an evolving industry, this year we will approach some new and exciting topics such as crisis and risk management, planning for the future of your business and how to begin a successful business in winery, apple growing, grape growing and the greenhouse business," said Bruce Bordelon, Indiana Horticultural Congress co-chair and professor of horticultural and landscape architecture at Purdue University. Highlighted topics covered during the event include: • Eliot Coleman, master organic farmer and organic gardening author from Harborside, Maine, who will discuss the importance of extending the growing season. • Risk management. Preparing for the unexpected with experts from Purdue's Department of Agricultural Economics. • Starting a greenhouse business. Primarily for new producers or individuals interested in beginning a greenhouse. • A winery start-up workshop. For participants who wish to set up their own commercial winery as a business. Purdue Extension, the Purdue Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, and industry groups sponsor this event. Registration is $40 for members of the Indiana Vegetable Growers Association, Indiana Horticultural Society, Indiana Farm Market Association and Indiana Wine Growers Guild; $50 for nonmembers. Additional fees will be charged for walk-up registrations, luncheons, banquets and special events. There also will be private applicator recertification and continuing education credits available during the event for an additional $10 fee.
