Purdue places student organization on probation

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue officials placed the university's student chapter of College Republicans on probation today (Thursday, 12/11) following an investigation concerning allegations of improper handling of the organization's funds.

In two fund-raising events this semester, the College Republicans' ticketing and inventory processes were inadequate, said Tamara Rice, assistant dean of students. A November investigation revealed that organization members kept no records of the number of tickets sold and the amount of money raised, and the money raised was not deposited in the organization's account in a timely manner.

The 150-member student group will be on probation until April 30.

"We felt that the violations were not flagrant enough to warrant a more serious penalty, such as suspension or expulsion, but should serve as a motivation and statement of expectation for positive change," Rice said. "Communication problems within the organization are to blame for most of the errors."

A student organization on probation maintains all rights and privileges of recognition, but is not in good standing with the university. Failure to comply with established rules and regulations during the probationary period could result in a stricter sanction.

"We are confident that College Republicans can eliminate any future incidents by communicating and planning more carefully." said Pablo Malavenda, associate dean of students. "Our office is working with them to resolve these problems."

The investigation stemmed from complaints in late October by students within the organization who were concerned about the way the money was being handled, Rice said.
