December 8, 2003 African delegation visit to IndianaA group of officials from Mozambique will meet with Indiana agriculture leaders on Thursday (12/11) as part of a trip arranged by Purdue University International Programs in Agriculture. Three Mozambique trade officials will visit with representatives of the Indiana Farm Bureau, the Indiana Agricultural Leadership Program and the International Trade Division of the Indiana Department of Commerce. The African officials will be in the United States as part of the African Growth and Opportunity Act Summit scheduled for Dec. 8-10 in Washington, D.C. The AGOA, created by legislation introduced by Sen. Richard Lugar, promotes efforts to increase African trade as a means of encouraging economic development and political reform in African nations. The African visitors will include Carlos Morgado, Minister of Industry and Commerce. The trip will provide a forum for the African leaders to make brief presentations on trade efforts in their country as well as discuss the role of agriculture in Mozambique and how it affects economic development. The trip to Indiana is sponsored by the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa. David Sammons, director of Purdue's International Programs in Agriculture, will be host for the visiting delegation during their brief stop.
