November 25, 2003 Purdue sponsors benefit concert in memory of volleyball playerWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Student Union Board will sponsor a scholarship benefit concert in memory of Joanna Lowry, a Purdue student who was a member of the volleyball team. The concert will take place from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday, Dec. 5, in La Posada, which is located across from Villa Pizza in the basement of the Purdue Memorial Union. Local rock bands Ava, Autumn Blue and Exit Fowler will perform. Speakers will talk about mental health issues during a break between performances. Tickets, which will be sold at the door, are $2 with a Purdue student identification card and $5 for the general public. Additional donations for the scholarship also will be accepted. Kim Stiller, PSUB director of concerts, said she hopes for a strong turnout. "At this time around the holidays and finals, several people tend to have depression issues," Stiller said. "We hope that by providing information from Counseling and Psychological Services and letting everyone know they are not alone, more people will seek help during this time of year." The endowed volleyball scholarship is managed by the John Purdue Club. People who cannot attend the concert but wish to donate to the scholarship fund should send a check made payable to the Purdue Foundation to the John Purdue Club, 850 Beering Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47907.
