Purdue launches new calendar Web site

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University today (Monday, 12/1) unveiled a new universitywide Internet calendar.

The University Calendars Web site, features a one-stop listing of activities at Purdue. the unveiling ceremony to introduce the comprehensive online calendar took place in the Purdue Memorial Union.

Don Gentry, vice provost for engagement, said the calendar is designed to be both inclusive and user-friendly.

"Whether you've been a Boilermaker for years or are new to Purdue, this calendar provides instant information on what is happening on campus," Gentry said. "Just go to the Purdue home page and click on 'Calendar.' I've bookmarked it already."

The University Calendars site is managed by the Office for Continuing Education and Conferences. Mark Pagano, dean of continuing education and conferences, said an advisory committee has worked diligently to make the calendar comprehensive and easy to navigate.

"Many departments and organizations have been tremendously responsive in providing this information," Pagano said. "Now, with a simple click of the mouse, students can find activities just for them, sports fans can find all the athletic schedules, while those who seek culture can find events sponsored by Purdue Convocations, Purdue Bands, Theatre and Galleries. The search is over."

Events are organized under 11 categories, including:

• All Events on the West Lafayette Campus – a comprehensive listing of events by date.

• Academic Calendar – schedules of registration, commencements and holidays.

• Alumni and Friends – local, state and national alumni and development events.

• Arts and Entertainment – listings of concerts, performances and exhibits.

• Career Programs – job fairs, workshops and other career-related events.

• Continuing Education and Conferences – schedules of conferences, camps, youth programs and non-credit activities.

• Intercollegiate Athletic Events – athletic schedules and information on special sporting events.

• Lectures and Seminars – announcements of campus speakers, special workshops and colloquiums.

• Prospective Students – orientation and other information of interest to students considering Purdue and recently admitted students.

• Recreational Fitness Activities – information on club and intramural sports, along with fitness and wellness related activities and work-life programs.

• Student Activities and Organizations – information on events sponsored by clubs, leadership organizations and service groups.

A link also is available to "School and Other Unit Calendars," which includes listings of events sponsored by specific schools. Another link to "Regional and Statewide Campus Events" contains information about events at other Purdue campuses.

The site also features a link to the community calendar, sponsored by the Lafayette-West Lafayette Convention & Visitors Bureau, for those interested in off-campus events. Links to the Purdue home page, a campus map, campus directories and a search engine also are included.

Guidelines for adding events to the calendar are available on the site. A group of designated calendar managers will regularly evaluate and post listings.
