Purdue Student Union Board sponsors talks on depression

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Student Union Board will sponsor two discussions on depression in December.

A brown bag discussion, entitled "The Not-So-Great Depression," will take place at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the Purdue Memorial Union, Room 84C. A panel discussion, entitled "What Would Freud Say: Nature or Nurture," will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in Stewart Center, Room 218C. Both events are free and open to the public.

David Rollock, a psychology professor at Purdue, will lead the informal brown bag discussion, to which attendees are welcome to bring their lunch. The panel discussion will feature approximately five professors who will debate whether biological or environmental factors have the most influence on mental health.

Emily Sherwood, PSUB ideas and issues project leader, says both discussions should provide valuable insight on depression.

"Mental health is extremely important and especially relevant during the winter months," Sherwood says. "Yet, mental health issues often are overlooked. Anyone is susceptible to depression, and it is vital for people to know how to take care of their minds and the minds of those around them."
