November 21, 2003 Land, pest management take stage at Purdue-Illinois crop programWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Agricultural producers will have the opportunity to seek information on land management, pests and pesticides at the annual Bi-State Crop Management Outlook program on Dec. 2. "There will be experts on hand from Purdue University, the University of Illinois, and private business to help farmers plan for a successful crop year in 2004," said Mark Spelbring, Purdue Extension Educator in Parke County. The Bi-State Ag Program Group of Extension staff from Indiana and Illinois counties organize this annual program, which focuses on topics critical to farming success. The program takes place at the Beef House Banquet Hall in Covington, Ind. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with sessions from 9:30 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. Advance reservations are requested through local Purdue Extension offices by Nov. 26. The three morning topics focus on land, beginning with "Affordable Cash Rent" by Bob Bosedorfer of First Midwest Bank in Danville, Ill. A panel discussion will follow as producers share their experiences with "Practical Precision Ag" tools that help them get site specific with land management. Then, Sylvie Brouder, associate professor of agronomy, will give a presentation answering the question "Is Your Tile Draining You Financially?" Producers also will have the opportunity to visit with commercial exhibitors during the lunch hour as well as before and after the sessions. Lunch is included in the $15 registration fee. The afternoon session will focus on pests and pesticides, beginning with "What About Weeds," with Betsey Smith, a Growers Co-op agronomist. Purdue Extension entomologist John Obermeyer will follow with "What's Bugging You?" Emerging soybean diseases in 2004 will be covered by Wayne Pedersen, University of Illinois professor of agronomy. The program will wrap up with "Indiana Pesticide Regulations: What You Need to Know," with Cheri Janssen, coordinator of the Purdue Private Applicator Recertification Program. While this information will be based on Indiana regulations, the topic will be useful to Illinois producers as well. For an additional $10 fee, continuing education credits are available for Indiana private applicators, commercial pesticide applicators and Certified Crop Advisers.
