Purdue men's rugby team wins its first Midwest regional title

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Division of Recreational Sports' men's rugby team earned a place in the national championship tournament in April by winning the Midwest Final Four championship in Columbus, Ohio.

The team defeated ninth ranked Bowling Green 34-0, and is now ranked sixth in the nation. On the way to this year's Midwest championship, Purdue also defeated the hosts and the sixth ranked Ohio State, 35-25. The national championship will be at the University of California at Berkeley.

"It's a great feeling to finally get over the top," said Erik Vaughn, men's rugby team coach. "We lost to Ohio State last year by six points, and we still had that taste in our mouths. I'd rather beat the big dogs. We have a real good chance of doing well at Berkeley. The dedication these boys have shown is unbelievable."

The men's rugby team is a club sport in Purdue's Division of Recreational Sports. Club president is Tom Miller, and Scott Peterson is team captain.
