SmokeFree Purdue supports Great American Smokeout

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – SmokeFree Purdue, an organization promoting the elimination of smoking at Purdue University, will participate in Thursday's (11/20) Great American Smokeout.

SmokeFree Purdue will have a display with information about smoking cessation methods located in the Heine Pharmacy Building lobby. A pharmacy intern will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to answer questions about nicotine replacement therapy and other pharmaceutical products designed to help smokers quit.

The Great American Smokeout is a national event that challenges people to stop using tobacco for the day and raises awareness about effective ways to successfully quit using tobacco products. The event allows smokers who are thinking about quitting to plan to quit on a day that offers public support and a feeling of fellowship with others who also want to give up the habit, says Hernando Perez, SmokeFree Purdue project coordinator.

Purdue is one of 13 universities in Indiana participating in a grant project funded by Smokefree Indiana through the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The purpose of SmokeFree Purdue is to maintain a student coalition that will advocate the decrease of smoking on campus and in the campus community.
